I just love this programme and your considered feedback and comments. As my friend said to me it doesn’t feel like participants want to be famous or on a reality show and that’s why it works; they are all so passionate and talented and it feels like an inclusive, caring show. Great and comforting TV. Long Live IDM.
I thought this week was a really good episode. The end results in both shops were great. Seeing how much the designers develop their skills and practice makes the programme so watchable. I would like longer views of the finished designs and feedback on the ‘sofa’ to really understand how the final decisions are reached.
Fundamentally disagree with your view of how people browse guitar shops. They arent going to impulse-buy a guitar. What is the point of exhausting yourself trying to encourage in someone with only a passing interest in guitars, they arent going to spend a minimum of £3000 on a guitar. Your comparison to a book shop and a florist is incorrect, theyre low ticket impulse purchases, the actual accurate comparison is to a bike shop or a high-end art shop. No one goes to a bike shop with their purchase riding on whether the layout tells a story, it hinges on whether the owner can advise them with what they want with confidence and knowledge. High ticket shops are mostly mission-led purchases, they dont need to tell a story and entice an impulse purchase because guitars are too expensive to be that. What they actually need to do is show enough competence and confidence for people to think "if and when I buy a guitar, I want to go here to do it". High-ticket shops actually generally dont want lots of people in who take up the time of the owner browsing only to blatantly not want to purchase anything. As for your praise of that godawful paper tree with 50 shades of grey pages hanging off it... what?? Anyone whos worked in retail or designed for retail knows that's going to fall apart in a month. It wont survive being moved, knocked or put into and out of storage. The staff arent going to sit there sticking paper back onto it when it falls off. The guitar shop brief was ten-folds more difficult, and the owner was in tears and has said it has totally changed his life.
Only just seen this, a couple of weeks after the episode. I said exactly the same thing while watching it. No disrespect to Michelle, who always talks a great deal of sense, but guitars are a special case and the finished shop looked wonderful. It allowed the guitars to sell themselves with, of course, some guidance from the owner. (Also, I thought Emmely should have won as she’s so watchable on TV and it won’t surprise me if she makes a name for herself in due course.)
