Better Home: Better Health — helping you harness the power of home, your fast track to healing, health and happiness.
Colour adds joy say I, but what if you're thinking, yes, but which colours? I don't know what works for me? Obviously, it's different for everyone. I love slightly muddy colours, aka brights toned down with a liberal dose of grey. I find them calming which is how I like my home as a whole to feel. There are moments of pigment-rich vivacity within it, but predominantly, it's muted greens, shades of blue and lavender. I have friends for whom this would be anathema. One who loves a set of colours that resemble a child's paint box. Another has white as her active, not default, choice. It's all good.
The point is that you find your rainbow tribe and run with it. Because if you want your home to uplift you, as well as represent you — making you feel comfortable and content — you need to embrace some colour.
The happiest and most welcoming homes reflect their owners likes and passions. But, when it comes to interior design for our own homes, we often over-think it. We get so worried about getting it wrong, that we forget we're actually allowed to do whatever we please — within the constraints of building law, gravity and landlords, obviously. But generally, it's as if we think that there's a 'right' way that homes should be decorated, and to veer from these unwritten rules is to transgress.
Well here's the thing, my only 'rule' is that you love it. You are the client! So let go of any need for external validation, and allow your intuitive sense to shine through.
