Andrée Putman is a gravelly-voiced, perpetually Helena Rubinstein-lipsticked (I asked, it’s Flirty Cherry no. 36) heroine of mine. Marrying wit, sophistication and a meticulous attention to detail, she has created interiors for Concorde, film sets for Peter Greenaway and shops for Yves St Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld and Azzadine Alaïa to name but three.
