Why? Because when life is simpler, it’s easier. Because when we are less distracted, we can focus on what’s really important. Because visual clutter is physically as well as emotionally draining — our brains are constantly scanning our surroundings and they literally have to work harder if surrounded by chaos — if you’re feeling exhausted or overwhelmed at home, it could be what surrounds you.
But make no mistake, I'm making no clarion call for minimalism here. I do not envision the 'perfect' home as one devoid of ornamentation, pots, and pictures. Precisely the opposite. Your cherished things are exactly what I want you to surround yourself with, and I make no judgment on what you consider treasured. I want you to wake up and see things that you love — walls covered in personal artwork, curiosity shelves replete with the talismans of your life, and those that you share your home with. These sacred items make you, you. They fortify you and remind you who you are. And in our homes, this should be without fear of judgement.
The key is to be sure these are the only things which surround you.
However I do invite you to uncouple your happiness from consumerism and the supposed trinkets of success. Embracing a simpler life and living with less, frees space for more: more time, more creativity, more experiences, more contentment, and more peace. Because sooner or later we all realise that life’s important things aren’t things at all. And, it is perfectly possible to enjoy life to the max and have a beautiful home filled with things you love, while reducing the resources you consume and the amount of pollution produced. And I’m so here for that.
